On 23 December 2023, the Liberian-flagged, Japanese-owned and Dutch-operated chemical tanker Chem Pluto was struck by a one-way drone allegedly launched by the Iranian military.[1][3][6] At the time, it was carrying crude oil from Saudi Arabia to India.[7] The attack caused a fire on board. Nobody was injured. The Indian Navy responded by sending a Vikram patrol vessel to the tanker.[8][9]
The ship may have been targeted because its operator, Ace Quantum Chemical Tankers, is linked to the Israeli billionaire Idan Ofer.[10]
After the attack, India deployed multiple guided missile destroyers to the Arabian Sea in order to protect the interests of India in shipping.[11] BNN Breaking, a Hong Kong based news company reported that this attack was a "disturbing demonstration of the potential security threats faced by maritime vessels".[11] The Indian Navy is currently conducting an investigation into the drone strike.[12]
